Next Production: Novel House

by Jayson McDonald, a Canadian playwright from London, ON
Directed by John R. Smith
Produced by Debbie Prentice
Stage Managed by Sally Johnston

April 12 (P), 13, 14, 15 (M), 18, 19, 20, 21

A warm look at the Novel family as they deal with life events. A novelist father, a scatterbrained wife and an eccentric grandfather combine to make a delightful evening of entertainment. Heather Bailey is playing Rebecca. She recently moved to Woodstock from Brantford, where she played Mary Snow in Salt Water Moon. Heather spent a year as a Rotary exchange student in India, and is an interesting young woman to talk to.

Our very own fabulous ASM, Brian Jackson, will be playing the role of Thomas. Mary will be played by Janet Orr. While Janet is often SM for Theatre Tillsonburg, she has won a WODL out of festival award for best supporting actress in her role as the wacky Carmen, in Cooking with Gus, and a cameo award for a role in Odd Couple.

We are excited to see Brian George on stage in the role of James Novel, the centre of the play. Mr. Marcus Tonner will be playing the eccentric grandfather, Geoffrey.

President's Corner

2007 is well underway and what a busy year it is shaping up to be for Theatre Woodstock!

The production of Sylvia, directed by Tony Harding, is just around the corner, previewing on February 8th and opening on the 9th. An ingenious look at the strain dog ownership places on 22 year marriage, dog owners will be rolling (over) in the aisles with Tracey Price's portrayal of the canine character, Sylvia. This production is Theatre Woodstock's out-of-festival entry in the 2007 WODL Festival and will be publicly adjudicated on February 14th. Why not make a Valentine's Day date of it and bring your sweetheart out for some Sweet Theatre, complete with champagne and chocolate-dipped strawberries before the show. Advance tickets for Sweet Theatre are available through the Box Office.

As we move into March, Theatre Woodstock will be hosting Woodstock's Got Talent, sponsored by Heart FM. Come out and audition your talent for a chance to be part of three nights of competition for top place, which includes a $1,000 prize! Don't feel brave enough to strut your stuff on stage? Make sure you have tickets to be part of the audience as the most talented members of Oxford County compete for top spot!

While all of this is going on, rehearsals have begun for Novel House with director John R. Smith, and of course the CAST kids are working to polish their spring shows as well, including Pirates of Penzance!

There's always something going on at Theatre Woodstock! Call the Box Office or drop in at Craftworks for tickets to these great upcoming events! --Tanya Thompson

CAST Stuff!

Our Wake-a-thon evening (December 16, 2006) went off without a hitch. There were about 75 people in attendance.

The guest speaker (Sarita Vandernaalt), who spent time in an AIDS orphanage in sub-saharan Africa, was beautiful and incredibly moving. You could have heard a pin drop during her presentation. When we asked for questions, we were overwhelmed. The question period went on for over an hour.

The committee of young people including Taylor Markham, Jessica Dunning, Cheryl Keyes, Andria Reaume, Leigh Cowan, Jacob Paquette, Jess Wareing, Karin Visser, Erica Roth, and Daniel Chu created a wonderful night - that included a talent show, jam sessions, dance class, crafts and movies. Also thanks to Sue Garner, Sarita Vandernaalt, Jeff Dunning, Laurie and Gary Markham, Lori and Eric Young, Kait and Emily Gray, Jen and Jason Paquette, Alex Saslove, Kayla James and Ben Alexander who generously donated their time (and stayed up all night!) Special thank-you to Sally Johnston and the parents that came in and made breakfast for us, and cleaned up afterwards.

The wake-a-thon raised $16,100.18. Top dollar amounts went to Lindsay Haas ($1,260), Leigh Cowan ($940). The highest number of pledges went to Eva Romme, who brought in 74 pledges!

For the Stephen Lewis Foundation, CAST has raised $1,300, through summer camp events; the wake-a-thon raised $16,100.18. Amanda Bergman donated her 50/50 prize of $85 and a donation from Matt Cassidy of $350 gives us a grand total to date of $17,935.18! Way to go CAST, you are all incredible!

Thank-you to TD Canada Trust for their $2,500 donation. We have purchased 3 hairline wireless microphones for the theatre. Thank-you to Deb Prentice for her hard work in helping us to receive the donation.

101 Dalmatians and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory were a huge success. CAST entertained 5 sold out shows. Make sure you get your tickets early for The Lost and Found Pound and Fiddler on the Roof. Tickets are on sale now at the box office.

The week of January 15-21, CAST was proud to host a mentoring project with Matt Cassidy and David Warrack.

Many of you may remember Matt Cassidy who was an original member of my first theatre for youth program in 1990 (before it was CAST) , and who also played many memorable roles for Theatre Woodstock, including The Artful Dodger and Snoopy. Matt, who now has an insanely successful career (last year he starred in the Toronto production of Lord of the Rings and this coming season he can be seen in Oklahoma and Pentecost at the Stratford Festival joined forces with...

David Warrack has a varied career as a performer, musical director, conductor, writer and producer. As a writer, he has had fifty-two shows produced professionally and he has been Musical Director for over two hundred productions across North America, including Shenandoah starring John Cullum on Broadway. He won a Dora Mavor Moore Award in Toronto for his production of Toronto, Toronto, and for outstanding Music Direction on the production of Closer Than Ever.

For the past seven seasons David has been Music Director for Ross Petty's madcap Christmas pantomines at the Elgin Theatre. This coming Christmas he will be involved in their production of Cinderella.

David is the music director/conductor for the brand new Canada Pops Orchestra, whose first full season began in the fall of 2003.

Seventeen young people spent every day from 3:30-9:00pm working with Matt and David. Classes included: Meisner (a method acting technique), vocal sessions, kick boxing, dance, yoga and one on one question and answer periods about 'the business'. One lucky participant had the opportunity to work with the professional technicians that Matt brought with him. The week ended with 4 concerts with the young people as 'special guest performers'. All 17 young people said it was an amazing experience that they will never forget.

I want to thank Matt and David for being so generous with their time and and their spirits. Matt donated $1,050 to be split between TW, CAST and the Stephen Lewis Foundation.

Many thanks to Kevin Schneider, Sally Johnston, Bonnie Hartley, Deb Prentice, Joanna Sweete, Laurie Markham and Taffy Weir who helped make this event a success. --Laurie Markham and Jennifer Paquette
