Director’s Notes
It has been my privilege to undertake a project of such human richness and depth as Love Letters. The author, A.R. Gurney has given us the difficult task of telling the story of two people’s relationship over a period of time that covers almost all of their lives.
This being a memory play, there are many challenges. These include the storytelling, the characters, the ever-changing emotional mood and the correspondence based structure of the script. Mr. Gurney has been good enough to include guidelines for the express purpose to encourage all who undertake this project to "Trust what I wrote, perform it as written, and all will be well."
As the director it has been my responsibility to ensure that the cast, designers, stage management and technicians are all completely aware of the script and the author’s intent. So that we, as an ensemble, can bring this story to life, for you, the audience, with all of its nuances in a clear and honest manner.
