Woodstock Little Theatre Wins Special Award
WLT received high praise for its production of Waiting for the Parade at the Western Ontario Drama League Festival held this past week in Sarnia. Adjudicator Richard Howard called it "visually stunning" and said "it captured the essence of the playwright's intent." At the awards banquet that culminated the week's efforts of the five competing groups, Parade captured nominations in every major category:
- Best visually co-ordinated production.
- Outstanding technical achievement.
- Outstanding lighting design and execution.
- Outstanding costumes.
- Outstanding ensemble work.
- Outstanding direction - Bonnie Coulter
- Outstanding performance in a major role - Kate Innes
The adjudicator acknowledged the strength of the production with a special award for "excellence in evoking a time era". However, London Community Players powerful entry of A Trip to Bountiful swept the awards. "It was a wonderful show, and when I saw it on Friday, I knew it would take Best Production, but it was still difficult to come second to it in every category. I felt we would take some of the visual awards", said Parade director, Bonnie Coulter. "We can take pride in the fact that we earned nominations in every category for which we were eligible. We had no male or supporting roles. It was a solid production, and we performed well in a new location. In fact, some of the lighting effects were even more impressive because of the angles we could achieve on Sarnia's larger stage." "Things were a little tense the day of of performance. It took us right up to the last minute to log the 127 light cues, but our cast and crew operated as an efficient team, including decorating the lobby as we had here in Woodstock. We were most appreciative for the support of Mayor Geoghegan and his wife who came to see the show again in Sarnia." "We had a great time in Sarnia, and picked up some good ideas for when it is our turn to host the WODL Festival in 1999. Drama Festivals are integral to the development of theatre at all levels. They are a tremendous opportunity to share and learn; not just for the competitors, but for the audience who come and participate. We are fortunate indeed here in Woodstock to have both our community theatre and several high-schools achieving the calibre of performance needed for festival competition. " As Adjudicator Richard Howard said every night, "We love it when you come to the theatre".
